CGC-certified Star Wars VHS Highlights Upcoming Heritage Sale

The early production VHS is among the CGC-certified Star Wars collectibles available in the Star Wars Signature Auction, going live just in time for May the Fourth.

An extremely rare drawer box VHS of the original Star Wars movie certified by CGC Home Video™ is up for grabs on Heritage Auctions, just in time for May the Fourth. The vintage videocassette is one of the many CGC-certified collectibles in Heritage's Star Wars Signature Auction, which is set to end on May 31, 2024.

The sealed Star Wars VHS from 20th Century Fox Video (1982) is graded CGC 9.2 A and is one of the rarest Star Wars collectibles in the world. It is believed that there are less than ten factory-sealed drawer box copies of Star Wars still in existence due to low production, according to the auction house.

The VHS release of Star Wars in the 1980s is credited as the main contributor to the rise of home media in the United States. Unfortunately, although families rushed to purchase VCR players to relive the space drama at home, only a few households (roughly 5%) owned VHS players when the first retail release of Star Wars was made available to the public outside of rental stores. Sales of this drawer box VHS were limited, and few copies were produced, making this initial retail release of Star Wars very rare.

Other CGC-certified collectibles in the auction include:

  • a Star Wars Insider #119 (Titan Publishing Co., 8-9/10) Convention Exclusive graded CGC 9.4 Signature Series for multiple signatures, including Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher
  • a Star Wars #1 (Marvel Comics, 3/15) graded CGC 9.6 Signature Series for multiple signatures, including Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford
  • a sealed The Empire Strikes Back VHS, CBS/Fox Video (1984) graded CGC 9.6 A++
  • a sealed Star Wars VHS, CBS/Fox Video (1984) from the 1988 Trilogy Set graded CGC 9.2 A++
