First-Release VHS and Betamax Cassettes Certified by CGC Home Video Lead Summer Heritage Auction

Two stellar rarities, including the first release of Back to the Future on VHS and the last Disney VHS release, are currently leading the August sale.

Dozens of videocassettes certified by CGC Home Video™, including a sealed first release copy of Back to the Future, are being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Online bidding is already underway for the Summer VHS and Home Entertainment Showcase Auction, which is set to end on August 25, 2023.

The sealed Back to the Future VHS, MCA Home Video (1986) graded CGC 9.2 A+ (lot 19016) has wraparound MCA Home Video watermarks on its shrink wrap, indicating that it is one of the first VHS releases of the movie. The case still has its oval Scotch EXG sticker on the spine, which is extremely rare. Back to the Future is a timeless classic that tells the story of Marty McFly, a teenager who travels back in time and accidentally interferes with his parents’ first meeting, endangering his own birth in the process.

In addition, a sealed Cars VHS, Buena Vista Home Entertainment (2007) graded CGC 9.2 A+ (lot 19048) is featured in the sale. While most Disney VHS tapes are common, Cars is a major exception. Not only was Cars the last major Disney film to be released on VHS, but the VHS release was only available to order through the Disney Movie Club program — it was never offered on retail store shelves.
