CGC Home Video Certifies a Collection of Exclusive Best Buy SteelBooks
In a world where streaming services are becoming the primary way to consume movies and TV shows at home, filmmakers and production companies have had to think outside the box in order to promote physical home media releases. One of the more popular ways to collect these physical home media releases is in the form of SteelBooks — 4K UHD discs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs that are packaged in a premium metal case.
SteelBooks are highly collectible because they often feature alternate artwork (usually commissioned or “classic” artwork related to the featured movie or TV show). SteelBooks are also often released as exclusive or limited-edition merchandise, making them rare or highly sought after. CGC Home Video™ recently certified some of these SteelBooks — a small collection of Best Buy Exclusive SteelBooks, including Deadpool 2, The Incredibles and The Avengers.
Best Buy began partnering with movie production companies to release limited-edition SteelBooks in the mid-2000s. Since then, Best Buy has released hundreds of exclusive DVD, Blu-ray and video game SteelBooks, many of which had exclusive artwork, luxurious finishes and a varnish across the steel case. Best Buy SteelBooks can be identified by the “Only @ Best Buy” sticker near the top of the case.
Collectors have flocked to Best Buy for years to add these exclusive SteelBooks to their collections, but their sights will soon change to other retailers. Best Buy announced that they were withdrawing from the physical home media market in early 2024, and the exclusive SteelBook market has now passed on to Walmart and other retailers.
