CGC-certified Star Wars VHS Realizes More than $20,000 in Goldin Pop Culture Auction

The elusive drawer-box copy of Star Wars is extremely hard to find in sealed condition.

A sealed Star Wars VHS that has been certified by CGC blasted off in a recent Goldin sale, landing among the stars as one of the highest-selling collectibles in the auction. It was just one of the many CGC-certified collectibles that were offered in Goldin’s July Pop Culture Elite Auction, which ended on August 2, 2025.

The sealed Star Wars VHS, 20th Century Fox (1982) Drawer Box with serial # R 503563 graded CGC 9.4 A+ (lot 12) realized $20,740, becoming the third highest-price realized for a CGC-certified copy of Star Wars on VHS. When Star Wars was released on home video for the first time in 1982, it was sold in stores as a sealed drawer-box VHS. However, production of these original drawer box copies was limited due to low sales numbers — VHS players were still new and relatively expensive, meaning many families didn’t have them in their homes at the time. When the home video market exploded later that year, Fox had already moved on and released a second version in new packaging. Because of this, these initial drawer-box releases of Star Wars on VHS are extremely rare.

Other notable CGC-certified video game and home video collectibles in the sale included:

  • a sealed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist for the Sega Genesis (1992) graded CGC 9.8 A+ and pedigreed to the Mark Freedman Collection (lot 986) that realized $5,185
  • a sealed Rocky II VHS, 20th Century Fox Video (1982) graded CGC 9.2 A+ (lot 1163) that realized $1,226
  • a sealed Metal Gear for the Nintendo Entertainment System (1988) graded CGC 9.4 A (lot 926) that realized $1,220
  • a sealed Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for the Sony PlayStation (2001) graded CGC 9.8 A+ (lot 1021) that realized $1,220
  • a Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back VHS, CBS/Fox Video (1984) graded CGC 9.8 A++ (lot 1170) that realized $854
  • a sealed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (For Promotional Use Only) VHS, New Line Home Video (1993) graded CGC 9.8 A+ (lot 22) that realized $610
