The History of DVDs and Blu-ray

The DVD, or digital video disc, was first released in Japan in 1996. As a successor to the videocassette, DVDs were a result of Philips and Sony ending their ongoing format war and banding together to create a single format disc that combined technology from both of their previous releases, the CD and CD-I, respectively, to create a digital video disc that could support full-length films.

DVDs became highly popular among consumers in the 2000s, leading to a shift in preferred home video distribution methods. By 2007, 80% of Americans owned a DVD player and several video game companies had adopted the DVD as their source medium, with Sony’s PlayStation 2 as the first console to officially run them.

In 2006, the successor to the DVD was released worldwide: The Blu-ray disc. Unlike DVDs, Blu-rays could store hours of high-definition video through the use of a violet laser instead of the red laser used for DVDs. Blu-rays are still commonly used today in home video distribution and are also used in modern video game distribution alongside cartridges.

CGC Home Video Grades Holiday Classics

So far, CGC Home Video has certified several popular DVDs and Blu-rays, including some of our favorite holiday adventures. This sealed Home Alone Ultra HD & Blu-ray Combo Pack, 20th Century Fox (2020) received a grade of CGC 9.6 A+. Home Alone was first released in the United States in 1990. In the film, Macaulay Culkin plays Kevin McCallister, a young boy who is accidentally left home alone when his family leaves for an international Christmas vacation. It was the highest-grossing live-action comedy for 21 years until the release of The Hangover Part II (2011).

CGC Home Video has also certified a sealed The Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray 3D video, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (2011) graded CGC 9.6 A++. Tim Burton’s family thriller delights audiences during both Halloween and Christmas, integrating both holidays into one spectacular and chilling stop-motion animation film. The plot centers around Jack Skellington, the “Pumpkin King” of Halloween, who grows tired of mundane horrors. When he discovers Christmas Town, he tries to take over Christmas, and hijinks ensue.

Finally, a sealed The Polar Express DVD, Warner Home Video (2005) graded CGC 9.2 A+ rounds out the collection of holiday favorites. The Polar Express received mixed reviews upon its theatrical release, but subsequent re-releases allowed the film to gain popularity with at-home audiences. Families fell in love with the magical adventure that saw children on a magical train traveling to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus, complete with catchy songs, thrilling antics and touching moments between characters.
