What Are Rejection Labels?

When CGC Home Video receives a submission that cannot be certified, the submitter will receive one of four labels, and the home media collectible will be returned.

Two of the most important aspects of certification are authentication and verification. CGC Home Video inspects each submitted home media collectible to determine whether it is genuine and can be certified. Unfortunately, not every home video evaluated is authentic. There are also home video collectibles that cannot be certified due to their size or the media player for which they were produced.

Home video collectibles that do not meet CGC Home Video's authentication standards or are uncertifiable for another reason will be rejected and returned to the submitter "raw" (unencapsulated) with one of four rejection labels: CTREIT or QA.

CT – Counterfeit

A videocassette, DVD or Blu-ray with a CT rejection label has one or several components that show evidence of forgery. Reproduction boxes, videocassettes, discs, cases, cover art and inserts have long been present in the home video collecting community, and they are often presented as genuine collectibles. CGC Home Video does not certify reproductions and will reject them as counterfeits. Home video collectibles determined to be counterfeits will be charged the full submission fee.

RE – Reseal

A home video collectible with an RE rejection label is a videocassette, DVD or Blu-ray that is authentic but shows evidence of being resealed. It is not uncommon for retailers to reseal media that was purchased, opened and later returned. While these home media may appear to be brand new, they are still resealed, and because these types of seals are not original, they cannot be certified by CGC Home Video. Home video collectibles determined to be resealed will be charged the full submission fee.

IT – Ineligible Type

In most cases, home video collectibles returned with an IT rejection label cannot be certified because they come in nonstandard-sized packaging and cannot fit into the CGC Home Video holders. These include items like big boxes, Betamax-sized book boxes, two-tape slipcases and others. An IT label may also be returned with personal home videos, or with a home video collectible produced for a home media player or for a region that CGC Home Video does not currently certify. Home video collectibles that are not currently graded by CGC Home Video will be charged full shipping and handling fees and returned to the submitter. Grading fees will be refunded.

QA – Questionable Authenticity

A home video collectible with a QA rejection label is a videocassette, DVD or Blu-ray that CGC Home Video cannot absolutely determine to be authentic. These home video collectibles may have evidence of being genuine, but they may also have evidence of being resealed or counterfeit. CGC Home Video will reject submissions with questionable authenticity. Submitters will be charged full shipping and handling fees, and collectibles will be returned to the submitter. Grading fees will be refunded.
