Alfred Hitchcock is known as one of the most influential film directors in the history of cinema. His record-setting horror and thriller films — including hits such as The Birds (1960) and Frenzy (1972) — earned him the title of “Master of Suspense” and made him a legendary filmmaker that is still referenced and revered to this day.
One of Hitchcock’s most well-known films is Psycho (1960), a horror film focused on the disappearance of Marion Crane, an on-the-run embezzler who mysteriously goes missing after staying at the Bates Motel. Regarded as one of Hitchcock’s best films, it is one of his most famous and influential works and has earned several awards and accolades.

CGC recently certified three high-grade examples of Psycho — two on VHS and one on Betamax. The two sealed VHS’s received grades of CGC 9.4 A+ and CGC 9.6 A+, while the sealed Betamax received a grade of CGC 9.6 A+. These early-print examples of Psycho are the first CGC-certified examples of their kind — previously, CGC had only certified one complete-in-box first-print Betamax example of Psycho.
“Sealed early prints of Psycho are very hard to find in good condition,” said Kenneth Thrower, Director of Grading at CGC Home Video. “We are honored to have graded these excellent relics of classic horror cinema.”

In addition to being one of Hitchcock’s best films, Psycho set the precedent for many slasher films that followed in the next several decades, introducing a new level of acceptability for violence and sexuality in American films and paving the way for future thrillers such as the Insidious franchise. Psycho’s shower scene has become a one of the most iconic moments in cinematic history and is referenced in many aspects of pop culture.
